Educators with technology – People

School visits have shown that educators are generally slow to embrace technology. In fact, this seems to be more of an obstacle to the implementation of 21st-century solutions than the dreaded budget. Consequently, the first focus of our model is to target educators with solutions training and awareness. This includes exposure to G-Suite for Education (free by Google), the Microsoft Office 365 environment (free in six of our nine provinces) as well as basic digital literacy programs. The standard of digital literacy has been replaced with digital FLUENCY.

Education with technology – Places

This phase is about enhancing the learning space and adapting our teaching style. While technology will never replace teachers, teachers with technology will likely replace teachers without technology. The focus here is on interactivity, the SAMR (substitution, augmentation, modification and redefinition) model, and integration of learner devices (phones and/or tablets). Handy solutions include e-readers for learners (and teachers) to have access to learning material without having to lug around a ton of textbooks every day. Snapplify is a sensible solution in this regard. The right time, subject and grade are crucial elements in this decision.

Educating technology subject matter- Knowledge

As the current curriculum provides limited exposure to the subject matter of technology, the governing body and school management are well positioned to manage it as an extracurricular activity. This could for example include programming, coding, robotics, app development, augmented reality, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, the use of drones and three-dimensional printing, which are all emerging as the latest international trends. The benefits of new technologies can address many of the challenges we face in education. Unfortunately, however, the use of technology and being in the digital world do pose certain risks as well.
